Rainwater tank has water, but the toilet switches to mains
What observations help tell a normal low-level changeover from a problem with the pump or controls? A tank can look like it still has water without showing whether there’s enough usable supply at the system’s pickup.
Would a low-water or fault indicator, or whether other rainwater-fed fixtures are affected, help narrow it down? I’d also like to know what’s safe to check from the outside, without opening electrical or pressurized parts.

A low-water or fault light is a useful clue, but its meaning depends on the system’s labels or manual; note exactly what it shows rather than treating it as a diagnosis. If several rainwater-fed fixtures are affected, that points more toward a shared supply or pump issue; one affected fixture suggests a local problem. From outside, check visible indicators and any accessible pressure reading. A tank gauge can show the level, but may not tell you whether there’s usable water at the system’s pickup. Don’t remove covers or open electrical or pressurized parts; if the display is unclear or the fault persists, have a qualified technician inspect it.
