I hear you on the “horror movie” scene—my worst nightmare is discovering a secret swamp under my kitchen. I’m leaning hard toward the in-kitchen trap, even if it’s not exactly a showpiece. At least if something’s going sideways, I’ll know before it turns into a full-blown disaster. I’d rather deal with a little stink than play plumbing roulette... plus, my luck isn’t that great anyway.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’d argue underground traps are less hassle in the long run. In-kitchen models need frequent cleaning and can be a pain if you’re trying to keep things low-odor and eco-friendly. Underground systems, if installed right, rarely cause drama—just need periodic pumping. I’d rather not have grease sitting in my kitchen at all.

That’s a fair point—having the trap outside does keep things tidier indoors. I get the appeal of less frequent cleaning, too. Still, I’ve seen a few underground setups go sideways when folks forget about regular pumping... then you’re dealing with a much bigger mess. Either way, it’s kind of a “pick your poison” situation. If you’re on top of maintenance, though, underground probably wins for peace of mind.

I get the hesitation about having grease anywhere near the kitchen, but honestly, I’m a little wary of the underground ones too. My neighbor had one and totally forgot about it until it backed up—let’s just say it wasn’t pretty. I guess if you’re organized and set reminders for pumping, outside makes sense. But for someone like me who’s still getting used to all this house stuff, having it inside where I can see it might actually be easier to manage. Out of sight, out of mind... sometimes that backfires.

I get where you’re coming from—out of sight really does mean out of mind, and that’s how stuff gets missed. But honestly, have you looked into the cost difference between the two? Underground traps are a lot more expensive to install and maintain, at least from what I’ve seen. Plus, if you ever need to dig it up for repairs, that’s a whole other headache (and bill).

Inside ones aren’t perfect either, but at least you can see when they’re getting gross and deal with it before it turns into a disaster. Yeah, it’s not fun having to clean it out, but I’d rather deal with a little mess now and then than a huge plumbing bill later. I guess it comes down to whether you want to pay more upfront and risk forgetting about it, or save some cash and just stay on top of the maintenance. For me, budget wins every time... even if it means dealing with some kitchen grease now and then.
