Choosing between in-kitchen and underground grease traps—what would you do?

I hear you on the maintenance headache—my in-kitchen trap is basically a part-time job. As for heated tape, it’s not too bad on the power bill (at least in my case), but I only run it when temps really drop. Yard digging freaked me out too... my lawn still hasn’t forgiven me, but no major runoff issues so far. Sometimes you just gotta pick your battles, right?

Yeah, picking your battles is the name of the game. I’ve had tenants swear by in-kitchen traps, but honestly, the constant cleaning drove me nuts. Underground was a pain to install—my backyard looked like a war zone for weeks—but long-term, way less hassle. Your lawn will bounce back eventually... mine did, sort of.

Underground’s the way to go if you want your sanity back, trust me. In-kitchen traps are just a magnet for headaches—constant cleaning, weird smells, and tenants never seem to empty them right. Sure, digging up the yard is a pain (my dog thought it was his new playground), but once it’s in, you barely think about it. The grass does come back... eventually. I’ll take a rough lawn over greasy floors any day.

I get the appeal of going underground, but I keep wondering about long-term maintenance. Once it's buried, how tough is it to deal with clogs or leaks down the line? Digging things up again sounds like a nightmare. Anyone actually had to do repairs after installation?

I hear you—once it’s underground, it’s not like you can just pop the lid and poke around. I’ve had to dig up a section before after a tree root got in and, yeah, it was a pain. But honestly, if you keep up with regular pumping and inspections, major issues are pretty rare. Still, I get why the idea makes people nervous.
