Choosing between in-kitchen and underground grease traps—what would you do?

- Gotta admit, the idea of chipping ice off an outdoor trap in January sounds like my worst nightmare.
- But, I dunno, indoor traps have their own drama—ever had one back up during a dinner party? Not fun.
- I guess it’s a trade-off: weather vs. weird smells and the occasional gross-out.
- Still, I’d rather deal with a mop than a shovel... most days.

Not sure I’d call indoor traps the easier option, honestly. I’ve seen way more kitchen backups than frozen outdoor lids. At least with an outside trap, you’re not dealing with smells right in your house. Sure, winter’s a pain, but a little pipe insulation goes a long way. I’d rather bundle up for a few minutes than have to explain a grease flood to guests...

I get what you’re saying about the smell—nothing worse than that lingering funk in the kitchen. But I’ve always worried about outdoor traps freezing up, especially since I’m not exactly handy with pipe insulation. Here’s how I try to keep things budget-friendly and low-hassle:

1. If you go with an indoor trap, clean it out every week. It’s not fun, but it’s way cheaper than calling a plumber.
2. For outdoor setups, basic foam insulation sleeves are pretty cheap at the hardware store. Just cut them to fit and zip-tie them on. I did this last winter, and it actually worked better than I thought.
3. Either way, always scrape plates and pans before washing. Less grease in the trap means fewer problems.

Honestly, both options have their headaches. I lean toward outdoor, but only if you’re up for a little DIY in the cold.

Man, I hear you on that. I once tried to “insulate” an outdoor trap with an old towel and a garbage bag—let’s just say it didn’t end well. Ended up with a block of grease ice and a very unhappy spouse. Indoor’s less risky for freezing, but yeah, that smell... it’s like a gym sock had a love child with an old fryer. Either way, scraping pans is the unsung hero here.

That’s the stuff nightmares are made of. I’ve seen folks try all sorts of DIY insulation tricks, but honestly, outdoor traps in cold climates are just asking for trouble. Indoors isn’t perfect, but at least you’re not chipping away at a frozen mess at 6am.
