Does a recurring disposal odor point to the splash baffle?

If a disposal is rinsed regularly but an odor keeps coming back, how often do you clean the underside of the splash baffle, not just the visible top? I’m curious whether people clean it on a set schedule or only when odor returns, and how quickly the smell tends to come back after cleaning.

What cleaning methods are safe for the baffle and disposal materials? I wouldn’t want to assume the baffle is the source; could a recurring odor instead point to buildup in the drain or somewhere else?

There isn’t a universal interval; I’d make a quick underside check part of occasional sink cleaning and clean it sooner if residue or odor appears, rather than relying only on smell. If odor returns soon after the baffle is cleaned, I wouldn’t just shorten the schedule - the drain or another nearby source may need attention too.
