- Been there with the clay—my backyard was basically a sponge for years.
- Tried French drains too, but they just clogged up fast in our soil.
- Ended up doing a combo: deep core aeration, sand/compost mix, and grading the yard a bit to push water away from the house.
- Still get some squishiness after heavy rain, but it dries out way faster now.
- Honestly, I think a little soggy grass is just part of life with clay soil... unless you wanna go full excavation mode.

I hear you on the clay soil struggles. My yard’s got that same “sponge” vibe after a good rain, and it’s been a learning curve. I tried French drains too, but honestly, they just filled up with mud and roots in no time—felt like more hassle than help.

What’s worked best for me so far is mixing in a ton of compost every spring and fall. It’s slow going, but over time the soil’s gotten less compacted and drains a bit better. I haven’t tried sand yet—kinda worried about it turning into concrete if I don’t get the ratio right. Grading helped a lot though, especially near the house foundation.

I’ve just accepted that there’ll always be a few squishy spots after a storm. Unless I want to rip everything up and start from scratch, it’s just part of the deal with this kind of soil. At least the grass is green, right?
