I totally get where you’re coming from—“mud sausage” is a pretty vivid mental image. I’ve been reading up on this stuff since moving in, and honestly, the idea of having to dig up a pipe every couple years sounds like a nightmare. The gravel trench approach seems a lot more straightforward, especially if you’re already dealing with heavy soil and don’t want to mess with plastic that might just collapse or clog anyway.

I’ve heard from a few neighbors that French drains (just gravel and fabric) can work really well if you size them right and keep the fabric tight enough to block silt but still let water through. It’s definitely old-school, but sometimes the simple way is best, especially if you’re not keen on maintenance. I’m leaning toward trying it myself—less risk of mystery goo, as you said, and no worries about kids jumping bikes over it.

It’s reassuring to hear someone else has had better luck with gravel. Makes me feel less like I’m missing some secret trick with pipes...

I get the appeal of gravel-only French drains, especially if you’re worried about “mystery goo” and digging up pipes every few years. But I’ve seen a lot of those old-school setups get overwhelmed in heavy storms, especially if the soil’s already saturated. Sometimes, a properly installed perforated pipe (with the right slope and cleanout access) actually lasts longer and moves water faster than just gravel. It’s not always about secret tricks—sometimes it’s just about matching the fix to the yard. I’ve had to unclog my share of both, but when the pipe’s done right, it can be surprisingly low-maintenance.
