One thing I don’t see mentioned much: sometimes the problem’s not the head or the filter, but the pipe itself.

Definitely agree—galvanized pipes are a nightmare for buildup. I’ve seen shower heads get clogged over and over, even after cleaning, just because the supply line was basically rust on the inside. Sometimes you can flush a bit out, but it’s usually a patch job. If you’re in an older place, it might be worth checking what’s behind the wall before buying another fancy head.

I get where you’re coming from about the pipes, but honestly, I’ve seen plenty of cases where the shower head itself is the main culprit—especially with those cheaper plastic models. Sometimes it’s just a bad design or a faulty gasket that sends water spraying sideways, no matter how clean your supply line is. Had one last month that looked fine on the outside, but the internal diverter was cracked. Swapped it out and problem solved, even though the house had old pipes.

Not saying pipe buildup isn’t a real headache (galvanized is notorious), but before tearing into walls or stressing about what’s lurking behind them, I’d double-check the head and fittings. Sometimes a new washer or a bit of plumber’s tape does more than you’d think. If you’re still getting weird spray patterns after that, then yeah, maybe time to worry about what’s upstream... but I wouldn’t jump straight to pipe replacement unless there’s clear evidence.

I had a similar “shower surprise” a couple months back, and honestly, I was convinced it had to be the pipes. The house is from the 70s and my brain immediately went to worst-case scenario—like, great, now I’m gonna find out the whole wall needs to come down. But after a bit of poking around (and watching way too many YouTube videos), it turned out the shower head had some gunk built up inside and the rubber washer was half disintegrated. Swapped in a new head and suddenly it was like a spa in there.

I get the temptation to blame the old plumbing, especially when you know it’s lurking behind the walls, but sometimes it really is just the cheap hardware or a $2 gasket. That said, if you’re still getting that wild spray after checking the basics, then yeah... probably time to brace yourself for pipe drama. But for me, starting with the easy fixes saved a lot of stress (and cash).

Totally agree—people always jump to “the pipes are shot” when it’s usually just the shower head or a busted washer. I’ve seen folks rip out half a wall for what turned out to be a $3 fix. One thing I’d add: sometimes the threads on the pipe get gunked up too, so it’s worth giving those a quick scrub before putting on the new head. Makes a difference, especially in older places.

Had almost the same thing happen at my aunt’s place last year—she called me in a panic thinking she’d need to redo all the plumbing because her shower was spraying sideways and even hit the ceiling. Turned out, it was just layers of old mineral buildup inside the shower head, plus some ancient plumber’s tape that had half-melted onto the threads. Took me longer to find a wrench in her junk drawer than to fix it.

I’ll second giving those threads a good scrub. Sometimes you think you’ve got it all off, but there’s still gunk hiding in there messing with the seal. I usually run an old toothbrush around a few times and wipe it down before putting everything back together. Not saying pipes never go bad, but in older houses it’s almost always something simple like this before it’s anything major. Funny how often people jump straight to worst-case scenario... guess that’s just home ownership for you.
