my shower's gone rogue and sprays everywhere but down
Out of curiosity, has anyone tried one of those all-metal rain shower heads? I’m tempted, but I wonder if they’re any better or just another trend.
I’ve actually swapped out a couple of plastic “self-cleaning” heads for solid brass rain shower models in my rentals. They’re definitely sturdier - no more cracked nozzles or weird spray angles after a year. The water flow feels more even, too, though you do need decent pressure or it can feel a bit underwhelming. Not sure I’d call them a trend; they just seem to last longer and are way easier to descale if you’ve got hard water. Just my two cents...

Honestly, I used to think all shower heads were pretty much the same until mine started spraying sideways and even up at the ceiling - had to laugh the first time it happened, but it got old fast. Swapped out the plastic one for a metal head last winter, and it’s held up way better. The weight just feels more substantial, and I haven’t had to deal with those tiny cracks or weird leaks ever since.
That said, I get what you mean about rain heads and low pressure. My neighbor put one in and it looks fancy, but he’s always joking about how it feels like standing in drizzle. I went with a metal multi-spray one instead, and it’s been a solid middle ground - no more wild jets spraying the shower curtain, but still enough oomph to actually rinse off. Definitely worth the extra few bucks for the metal, at least in my experience.
Metal heads really do make a difference, especially over time. One thing I’d add - sometimes even metal ones can get clogged with mineral deposits, which can mess up the spray pattern. Quick soak in vinegar every few months keeps things working right. Never been a fan of those rain heads either...they look cool but I actually want to rinse off, not just get misted.
Yeah, totally agree about the mineral buildup - even the pricier metal heads get gunked up faster than people think. Vinegar works, but if it’s really bad, I’ll take a toothpick or a pin and poke out the holes. Kinda gross but it does the trick. Rain heads look fancy, but honestly, I want water pressure, not a gentle drizzle. Never understood the hype... I’d rather just get clean and move on with my day.
