Definitely get what you mean about those old valves—they make me nervous too. Last time I tried turning one, it felt like it might just crumble in my hand. As for the anti-clog shower heads, I swear mine’s worse than the cheap one it replaced... Vinegar helped a bit, but honestly, I think some designs just trap more junk.

I hear you on those anti-clog shower heads—mine’s supposed to be “self-cleaning,” but I think it just means it sprays water sideways instead of down. I’ve tried the vinegar trick too, and while it helps a bit, some of these designs just seem to collect gunk in places you can’t reach. If you’re feeling brave, taking the head apart (if possible) and poking through the holes with a toothpick or needle sometimes works wonders. Just be careful not to lose any tiny washers... learned that one the hard way.

Honestly, I’ve had mixed luck with poking through the holes—sometimes it just pushes the gunk further in, and then you’re dealing with a full-on showerhead surgery. I actually found that running hot water through it after the vinegar soak helps loosen stuff up before you start poking around. And yeah, those tiny washers... they have a way of vanishing into thin air. Maybe the real self-cleaning feature is just making us replace the whole thing every year?

I get the temptation, but tossing the whole showerhead every year seems kinda wasteful, honestly. I’ve had good luck with a combo of baking soda and vinegar (yeah, it fizzes up like a science project), then using a soft toothbrush instead of poking at the holes. Less risk of pushing gunk deeper, and it’s gentler on the finish. Those washers are like socks in the dryer though—disappear every time.

- Swapping out the whole showerhead every year sounds like a hassle and honestly, not cheap if you’ve got multiple units.
- I usually just unscrew ‘em, soak in vinegar overnight, then poke at stubborn spots with a toothpick. Works 90% of the time unless it’s ancient or full of hard water buildup.
- If you’re losing washers, try keeping a little stash—learned that after too many leaks.
- Ever tried those rubber nozzles you can just rub with your thumb? They’re not perfect, but way easier to maintain than the old metal ones.
