The low-flow ones are so precise that even a little bit of crust and you’re dodging water jets like you’re in some kind of obstacle course.

Haha, that’s exactly how mine acted last winter. I actually timed how long it took to clean it vs. the water I was “saving” and honestly, it was a toss-up. The vinegar soak trick helps, but I wish these eco heads were a bit less high-maintenance. I still prefer them, but yeah, there’s definitely a trade-off.

I hear you on the maintenance side. I swapped to a low-flow head last year, and it’s definitely not as “set and forget” as the old one. The buildup gets out of hand fast if you’ve got hard water. I’m always a bit wary about taking it apart too often, though—some of those plastic fittings feel like they’ll snap if you look at them wrong. Has anyone tried using one of those inline filters to cut down on the mineral deposits? I’m tempted, but not sure if it’s worth the hassle or if it actually helps with the spray pattern going haywire.

I’ve wondered the same thing about inline filters. I tried one of those cheap universal ones last winter, mostly out of curiosity. It did cut down on the white crust, but I still had to clean the head every couple months. Not sure if it’s worth it unless your water’s really bad. Have you looked into a vinegar soak instead? That’s been my go-to, though it’s a pain to remember.

I’ve had a few tenants complain about the “sideways shower” problem—usually it’s just mineral buildup clogging half the holes. Here’s what’s worked for me: unscrew the head, soak it in a baggie of vinegar overnight, then poke out the jets with a toothpick or old toothbrush. Inline filters help a bit, but honestly, unless your water’s super hard, regular vinegar soaks are cheaper and just as effective. The trick is actually remembering to do it before it gets wild... I set a reminder on my phone every couple months. Not glamorous, but it keeps the spray pointed where it should be.

I get the vinegar trick, but honestly, I’ve had mixed results. Sometimes the buildup is so stubborn it needs a bit more elbow grease. I usually take the showerhead apart and let the pieces soak separately—seems to get into all the nooks better. If you’re dealing with ancient plumbing, though, be careful not to crack anything. Learned that the hard way once...
