Why do faucet handles turn opposite ways?

Had to laugh reading this—my last apartment had a hot handle that spun like a roulette wheel and a cold that needed both hands and a prayer. Swapped the cartridges and, surprise, the handles STILL turned opposite ways. I guess it’s just one of those quirks you learn to live with... or grumble about every morning.

- That’s a classic. Most faucets use different stem designs for hot and cold—one’s usually reverse-threaded, so even if you swap cartridges, the direction stays opposite.
- Manufacturers do this to prevent scalding, but it’s not always intuitive. Some older models are just... weird.
- Honestly, unless you want to replace the whole valve body, it’s one of those “live with it or grumble” situations.
- At least you know you’re not alone—seen this in plenty of rentals. Hang in there.
