Never had much luck with the apps, honestly. Tried one when I first moved here and the guy tracked mud everywhere and left before the job was done. Now I just keep my regular plumber’s number handy. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

Honestly, I hear you. I tried a couple of those apps when I was redoing my bathroom, thinking it’d be quicker than waiting for my usual guy. Big mistake. One plumber showed up late, barely spoke two words, and then left a mess behind—like, drywall dust everywhere, didn’t even bother to sweep up. Not the end of the world, but still... if I wanted to clean up after someone, I’d just do the work myself.

I’ve gone back to calling my regular plumber too. He’s not the cheapest, but at least I know what I’m getting and he respects my house. Maybe the apps work for some people, but I’d rather stick with someone I trust, even if it means waiting an extra day or two. Sometimes the old-school way just makes more sense.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually had the opposite experience with the apps. I mean, yeah, there’s always a risk of getting someone who doesn’t care about cleanup—totally annoying—but isn’t that just as likely with any random contractor? The thing I like about the apps is you can see reviews and sometimes even photos of their work before you book. If someone’s got a bunch of complaints about leaving messes or being late, I just skip them.

“He’s not the cheapest, but at least I know what I’m getting and he respects my house.”

That’s fair, but have you ever compared the actual cost difference? My regular plumber charges a call-out fee plus hourly, and it adds up fast. With the app, I’ve found flat rates for small jobs—like fixing a leaky faucet or unclogging a drain—that are way less than what my usual guy would charge. Maybe it depends on where you live or how much competition there is.

Curious if anyone else has tried using the app’s “satisfaction guarantee” thing? One time a guy did a sloppy job and they sent someone else out to fix it for free. Not perfect, but at least there was some recourse.

PLUMBER ON SPEED DIAL VS. PLUMBING APPS—WHAT'S YOUR GO-TO?

I get what you’re saying about the apps being more transparent with reviews and all, but I’ve seen those go sideways too. Sometimes the photos look great, but then you realize they’re just stock images or from totally different jobs. I’ve even had a couple of customers show me app profiles where the same “before and after” shots pop up on multiple plumbers’ pages. Makes me wonder how much you can trust that stuff.

Here’s my step-by-step when weighing apps vs. a regular plumber:

1. Figure out if it’s a small fix or something bigger. Apps are fine for a leaky faucet or clogged drain, yeah, but I’d be nervous booking someone random for anything involving pipes inside walls or major replacements.
2. Check the reviews, but dig deeper than just the star rating. I always read the most recent ones first—sometimes you’ll see a pattern like “great at first, then started rushing jobs.”
3. Compare the pricing structure carefully. Flat rates sound good until you hit something unexpected mid-job and suddenly there’s an “extra charge.” At least with my usual guy, he’ll walk me through what’s going on before adding to the bill.
4. Ask about guarantees upfront. The app’s satisfaction guarantee is decent in theory, but in practice it can be a hassle waiting for them to send someone else out, especially if it’s urgent.

Funny thing—one time I got called to fix a botched install from an app plumber who left behind a mess of caulk and didn’t even tighten the fittings properly. The homeowner said the app sent another guy out, but he just patched over the problem instead of fixing it right... ended up costing more in the long run.

Does anyone ever ask app plumbers directly about their experience or certifications? Or do you just go by reviews? That’s one thing I still don’t love about apps—you lose that direct line to someone who knows your house and your plumbing history. Maybe I’m old school, but sometimes having that relationship matters more than saving a few bucks upfront...

Couldn’t agree more. There’s just something about having “your guy” who remembers that weird shutoff valve in the basement or the time you tried to fix the garbage disposal yourself (guilty). I’ve used apps for quick stuff, but when it comes to anything major, I’d rather pay a bit extra for peace of mind. Had a similar experience with an app plumber who left a leak behind the wall—didn’t catch it until weeks later. Lesson learned: sometimes old school wins.
