Saving water in the shower actually worked for me

Funny you mention the softener noise—ours started making this weird grinding sound last winter. Turned out it just needed a good clean and a check on the brine tank float. Ever tried running a manual regen cycle? Sometimes that helps reset things if it’s acting up or burning through salt faster than usual. As for those eco shower timers, I’ve seen them but always wondered if they’d just annoy everyone in the house... Do they actually get used, or do people just ignore them after a week?

Manual regen has saved my bacon a couple times when the softener got weird. As for those shower timers, my roommate tried one—worked for like three days before we all started ignoring it. Guess it depends how stubborn your household is about saving water...

Manual regen is a lifesaver when the softener acts up, no doubt. About those shower timers—yeah, I’ve seen them get ignored pretty quick too. Honestly, I think the trick is making water-saving habits stick without relying on gadgets that just become background noise. I’ve had better luck swapping in low-flow showerheads or even just putting a bucket in the shower to see how much water gets wasted. Sometimes seeing it pile up makes people think twice, even if they’re not super stubborn about conservation.

Funny you mention buckets—I tried that trick in one of my rentals and it actually made a difference. Tenants started competing to see who could fill it the least, which was kind of hilarious. I’m curious, though: have you noticed any pushback about low-flow showerheads? Some folks swear they can’t get clean with them, but I’ve never really had complaints once they’re in. Maybe it’s all about how you introduce the idea?

Buckets definitely bring out people’s competitive side—who knew saving water could get that intense? I’ve seen tenants get weirdly proud about their “record low” buckets, and a couple even started keeping score on the fridge. Never thought I’d see the day.

About those low-flow showerheads, it’s funny... I expected way more pushback. There’s always that one guy who claims he can’t rinse shampoo out with anything less than a firehose, but honestly, most folks don’t even notice after a week or two. I usually just swap them out during routine maintenance and mention it like it’s an upgrade—“new water-saving feature,” fancy language and all. If you make it sound like a perk, folks seem to go along with it.

Only real hiccup was one tenant who swore her dog couldn’t get clean without “the old pressure.” Not sure how much of that was about the dog, to be honest. In the end, nobody moved out over a showerhead.
