If it still sounds like it’s eating gravel after all that, might be time to call in backup... or just wear noise-cancelling headphones during the wash cycle.

Honestly, I’d say don’t give up too soon. Last time mine sounded like a blender full of marbles, it turned out to be a tiny bit of broken glass wedged under the impeller. Took me three tries to spot it. If you’re comfortable taking things apart, it’s worth poking around a little more before calling for help. Just keep a towel handy—those sumps can get pretty gross.

That’s a good point—sometimes it really is just some random debris hiding out in there. Did you have to pull the whole pump assembly, or just the filter and impeller cover? I swear every time I open mine up, I find something weird stuck somewhere new...

I usually just pull the filter and impeller cover first—no need to yank the whole pump unless you’re still having issues after a good clean-out. Nine times out of ten, it’s a toothpick or a bit of glass wedged in there. Once found a Lego head, believe it or not. If you’re still hearing weird noises after clearing the obvious stuff, then yeah, maybe dig deeper, but I’d start simple.

That’s a solid way to go about it. I’d just add—keep an old toothbrush handy for scrubbing out the filter and around the impeller. Saves you a headache later. Amazing what ends up in there… I once pulled out a twist tie.

- Completely agree on the toothbrush trick. Gets into those tight spots around the impeller where gunk loves to hide.
- Quick tip: after cleaning the filter and impeller, run a short cycle with a cup of vinegar on the top rack. Cuts through any leftover grease and helps with odors.
- Make sure to check the spray arms too. Toothpicks or a thin wire work for clearing out any blocked holes, especially if you notice dishes on the top rack aren’t getting clean.
- One thing to watch—don’t overdo it with scrubbing pads. Some filters are plastic and scratch easily, which can actually trap more grime over time.
- If you hear a weird noise after cleaning, double-check that the impeller cover is seated right. I’ve seen people forget that step and end up with a leak or rattling.

It’s wild what people find in there... I once pulled out a broken piece of glass and didn’t even remember breaking anything. Just goes to show, always check before assuming you need a new part.
