Yeah, I hear ya on the air gap being reliable, but I've had a high loop setup for about five years now without any issues (knock on wood...). I went that route mostly to keep things minimal and eco-friendly—less plastic parts and clutter. But your story definitely makes me rethink things a bit. Maybe I've just been lucky so far? Guess I'll cross that bridge when (or if) I come to it, haha.

Five years without issues is pretty solid, honestly. I've seen high loops hold up even longer, but when they fail...it's usually at the worst possible time (like Thanksgiving dinner, ask me how I know...). Ever checked yours for buildup or signs of wear?

Five years is definitely solid, but yeah...those loops can be sneaky. I've seen some that looked totally fine from the outside, but inside they were practically clogged shut with gunk. Had one customer whose dishwasher backed up right before a big family gathering—turns out the loop was kinked behind the cabinet and slowly building up residue. Ever since then, I always recommend giving it a quick check every couple years or so. Better safe than sorry, especially around holidays.
