I’ve wondered about the beeswax thing too—seems like it’d help, but I’m not sure how well it would hold up if there’s a leak or lots of humidity. I tried coated paper labels once and they just peeled off after a few months. Glass jars are a cool idea, but I don’t really have space for them under my sink. It’s like, every solution has some weird trade-off...

Yeah, it really does feel like every method comes with its own set of headaches. I’ve had the same issue with labels just giving up after a while—humidity under the sink is no joke. Beeswax sounded promising to me too, but I keep picturing it melting or getting all grimy if there’s a drip. Space is always at a premium in my place, so glass jars are out for me as well. Sometimes I just take photos on my phone and hope I remember what’s what... not exactly high-tech, but it’s cheap and doesn’t take up space. It’s definitely not just you running into these weird trade-offs.

I’ve done the same thing—snapped a bunch of pics, then later realized I had no idea which pipe was which because the angles all looked the same. Once, I tried using colored zip ties as “labels” on the pipes, thinking they’d hold up better than tape or stickers. They worked for a while, but then I forgot what color meant what... so back to square one. It’s wild how something that seems simple gets complicated fast under a sink.

Totally get what you mean about the photos. I’ve seen people take a dozen shots from every angle, but once you’re back under the sink, it’s all just a mess of elbows and couplings. The colored zip tie trick is clever, but yeah, unless you keep a key somewhere, it’s easy to lose track. I’ve tried using a label maker with waterproof tape—those labels last a bit longer, but even then, they can peel off if there’s any moisture or if you have to move things around.

One thing that helps a bit is drawing a quick diagram right after you take things apart. Doesn’t have to be fancy—just a rough sketch with arrows and notes like “hot water in” or “drain out.” It’s not foolproof, but at least it gives you something to reference when you’re staring at a pile of parts later. Sometimes I’ll number the pipes with a marker, but even that’s not perfect if you have to clean or replace sections.

Honestly, half the time the biggest issue is just the cramped space. You’re contorted under the sink, flashlight wedged between your shoulder and your ear, trying not to drop anything. It’s no wonder things get mixed up. I’ve seen some folks use shrink tubing with numbers or letters printed on them, which seems to hold up better than tape or zip ties, but it’s a bit overkill for most home jobs.

At the end of the day, even with all the tricks, it’s just a fiddly process. I wish manufacturers would standardize markings or color codes, but until then, it’s a lot of improvising. If you figure out a method that actually works every time, let me know... I’m still looking for the holy grail myself.

That’s the real killer right there. Even with diagrams or labels, once you’re upside down in a cabinet, it’s chaos. I’ve tried permanent markers on pipes—works until you have to scrub off old gunk or replace a section. Photos help a bit, but unless you’re super methodical (and who is when water’s dripping everywhere?), it’s easy to miss something. Standardized markings would be a game changer, but I doubt we’ll see that anytime soon. For now, it’s mostly just muscle memory and hoping you don’t end up with an extra washer at the end...
