Solids staying damp and clumping in a self-contained composter
When solids stay wet and clump instead of drying between uses, how do you narrow down whether it’s a ventilation issue, not enough cover material, or just how that particular toilet manages moisture?
Does it matter how long the dampness has been happening, and whether it’s confined to the solids chamber? I’d also be curious whether the fan and vent appear to be operating normally. For basic maintenance, is there anything safe to try before contacting the manufacturer, or is it best to stick closely to the model’s manual for adding cover material, emptying, and any adjustments?

The pattern can help narrow it down, but it won’t diagnose a particular model by itself. When the dampness began, whether it’s confined to the solids chamber, and any changes in fan or vent operation or cover-material use are useful clues. Confirm the fan and vent as the manual describes, and use only its approved cover-material amounts and adjustments. If the problem persists or the fan or vent seems faulty, contact the manufacturer rather than improvising a repair.
There’s no universal number of hours or days that defines “persistent”; it depends on the model and its normal moisture behavior. A practical signal is that the clumping recurs over repeated normal uses despite following the manual’s cover-material guidance. I’d contact the manufacturer sooner if it worsens or the fan or vent seems faulty, rather than waiting for an arbitrary time threshold.
