Didn’t even think about bugs at first—walked in one day and there were like five moths just chilling inside.

Yeah, bugs love those vents if you don’t cover ’em up. I’ve used everything from mesh to old pantyhose in a pinch. As for fan noise, the little USB ones barely make a peep, but I did try a bigger 12V once—sounded like a jet engine in a closet. Not worth it unless you’re desperate for airflow.

I’ve been there with the noisy fans—tried to “upgrade” for better airflow and ended up regretting it. What’s worked best for me is a low-profile USB fan paired with fine stainless mesh over the vent. Keeps the bugs out and doesn’t sound like you’re running an airport in the bathroom. I tried pantyhose too, but they clogged up faster than I expected. Mesh seems to last longer if you’re not keen on swapping it out every month.

Mesh over the vent is a game changer—I went with a stainless steel tea strainer cut to size and it’s been going strong for months. If you want to get fancy, you can sandwich the mesh between two vent flanges with a bead of silicone to keep things tight and bug-proof. I tried window screen material once, but it tore way too easily. USB fans are definitely quieter, but I sometimes wonder if they move enough air on muggy days... tradeoffs, I guess.

That’s a solid setup—tea strainer mesh is way tougher than window screen, for sure. I’ve seen folks try hardware cloth too, but it’s overkill unless you’re in serious critter country. On the USB fans, I hear you... they’re quiet but airflow can be hit or miss. Ever tried running two in parallel? Sometimes doubling up helps on those sticky days. Either way, sounds like you’ve got a pretty dialed system now.

I get where you’re coming from on doubling up the USB fans, but I’ve actually had mixed results with that. Sometimes the airflow doesn’t increase as much as you’d think—could be resistance in the ducting or just the fans themselves not stacking well. I’ve found a single, higher-quality 120mm fan wired to a 12V source moves way more air and is still pretty quiet. Mesh-wise, I’d stick to stainless if you can swing it; anything galvanized starts to rust after a season or two, especially with all that humidity.
