We had a similar issue with our 70s ranch - vent stack was clogged up pretty bad. Took me forever to figure out why the new low-flow toilet was struggling. Once cleared though, it worked like a charm...lesson learned the hard way, haha.

Had a similar headache when we switched to low-flow fixtures in our older place. Honestly, I was skeptical at first - seemed like marketing hype to me. But after sorting out some venting issues (why is it always the vents?), things improved noticeably. Still curious though, anyone here actually tried composting toilets long-term? Wondering if they're worth the hassle or just another eco-trend that's more trouble than it's worth...

I've looked into composting toilets a bit, mostly because the water savings sounded tempting. But honestly, the upfront cost and maintenance kinda put me off. Plus, I've heard mixed reviews - some say they're great once you get used to them, others complain about odors or extra chores. Anyone know if the cheaper DIY setups are actually viable long-term, or do you really need to shell out for those pricey commercial units?

Honestly, DIY setups can work fine long-term if you're meticulous about ventilation and compost management. Seen plenty of homemade units running smoothly for years. But if you're squeamish about maintenance or odors...low-flow toilets might save your sanity, lol.

Totally agree on DIY compost setups being viable, provided you're diligent. A few extra points from experience:

- Proper ventilation isn't just about odors - it's crucial to prevent moisture buildup, which can degrade your composting efficiency over time.
- Low-flow toilets are definitely lower maintenance, but keep in mind they can sometimes require double flushing if the design isn't optimal. Seen this happen a lot with cheaper models.
- If you're leaning compost, consider a urine-diverting system. It significantly reduces odor and makes compost management way easier.

Either way, both options beat traditional setups environmentally...just depends on your comfort level with upkeep.
