I’ve run into the same issue with painter’s tape peeling up, especially in basements where it gets damp. I tried using zip ties with laminated labels for a while, but they’re kind of a pain to update if something changes. The milk jug idea is clever—never thought of that. I usually just scribble on masking tape and hope for the best, but it does get gross over time. And yeah, blocking shutoff valves is a rookie mistake... learned that one the hard way during a leak last winter.

- Been there with the tape—humidity just eats it up, especially in older basements.
- Laminated labels look tidy but yeah, updating them is a hassle.
- I’ve started using those paint pens on PVC or copper directly. Not perfect, but it holds up better than tape and you can wipe it off with acetone if you need to change something.
- Blocking shutoff valves...yep, that’s a rite of passage. At least you learned before a major disaster.
- Honestly, half the time I just keep a notebook with diagrams in the utility room. Not high-tech, but it’s saved me more than once when labels failed.

Paint pens are a solid move—I've had tape peel off in less than a year, especially in damp corners. Honestly, I've given up on fancy labeling systems. A beat-up binder with hand-drawn maps and notes has bailed me out more times than I'd like to admit. Curious if anyone's tried QR codes or digital logs for this stuff? I keep thinking about it, but paper just seems more reliable when you're knee-deep in water...

Honestly, I get the appeal of paper, but I switched to a free spreadsheet app on my phone for tracking valves and shut-offs. Even if my hands are wet, it’s faster than flipping through pages. Haven’t had a water-damaged phone yet... knock on wood.

I totally get where you’re coming from—digital tracking is such a game changer for stuff like this. I used to keep a detailed binder, but honestly, I’d misplace it half the time or spill something on it. The phone’s always in my pocket anyway. Just gotta remember to back up those files... learned that the hard way once.
