That bit about the drain line through the closet shelf had me shaking my head. I’ve seen some wild stuff, but that’s next-level. I totally get what you mean about old houses—every time I think I’ve got a wall figured out, there’s some mystery pipe or wire lurking. You mentioned,

“I assume every wall hides at least one surprise. Keeps me humble... and cautious.”
That’s the only way to do it, honestly. Have you ever tried using a stud finder with wire detection? I know they’re not perfect, but sometimes they catch things I wouldn’t expect. I’m with you on the thermal camera, though—feels like overkill for most jobs. Do you ever just wish there was a magic x-ray for walls?

That drain line story had me laughing because, man, I’ve run into some real head-scratchers too. I’ll say, stud finders with wire detection are hit or miss—they save you once, then miss the next time. I’ve actually found a cheap borescope more useful than a thermal camera for most stuff. Still, if someone invents that magic x-ray, I’m first in line. Until then, it’s a lot of cautious poking and crossed fingers.

Yeah, I hear you on stud finders—they’re only as good as the person using them, and even then, you’re rolling the dice half the time. I’ve had better luck tracing pipes by tapping along the wall and listening for pitch changes, honestly. Borescopes are handy, but sometimes you just need to cut a small inspection hole and see for yourself. Not ideal, but it beats flooding a room because you trusted a gadget too much.

Man, I hear that. I tried one of those “smart” stud finders once—thing beeped like crazy, but all I found was my wallet getting lighter. I’m all for the tap-and-listen method, but my walls must be tone-deaf or something. Ended up poking a tiny hole and peeking in with my phone flashlight. Not pretty, but hey, drywall’s cheaper than a plumber call... most days.

Yeah, I get it—sometimes you just gotta make a hole and deal with patching later. Those fancy tools are hit or miss for me too. Ever tried using a rare earth magnet to find screws or pipes? Not perfect, but sometimes it’s quicker than guessing.
