I’ve seen some guys snap a pic on their phone and leave it at that, but it feels like there’s gotta be a better way to keep track, especially when you come back months later and everything blurs together.

Man, I totally get that—my phone’s full of blurry pipe pics that make zero sense after a week. I tried drawing diagrams once, but my “art” is basically stick figures and squiggles. Colored ties are a lifesaver, though. Honestly, as long as I don’t have to scrape off duct tape gunk again, I’m happy.

Colored ties are a game changer, for sure. I used to just slap masking tape on everything and scribble “hot” or “cold” with a Sharpie, but after a few months in a crawlspace, that stuff’s unreadable. Plus, like you said, duct tape gunk is the worst—had to use Goo Gone on my own hands once.

Same here. I always think I’ll remember what I was looking at, but a month later it’s just a mess of copper and shadows. Lately, I’ve started using those cheap plastic key tags—they’re like 5 bucks for a hundred, and you can write on the little paper insert. Not pretty, but at least I know which shutoff goes where when I’m half-asleep and there’s water everywhere.

I tried drawing diagrams too, but my “blueprints” look like a toddler’s treasure map. Honestly, whatever keeps me from tracing pipes for an hour is good enough.

Honestly, I get the appeal of tags and colored ties, but for me, they just end up lost or covered in dust after a while.

“my phone’s full of blurry pipe pics that make zero sense after a week”
—yep, that’s my whole camera roll. What actually worked better for me was just making a short video talking through the pipes as I went. Sounds silly, but hearing myself say “this valve shuts off the kitchen sink” is way less confusing than trying to decode my own handwriting later. Not perfect, but at least my future self can’t argue with my past self’s voice...

I tried the colored zip ties thing and now my basement looks like a failed art project. I swear, I still have no idea which tie means what. The video idea is actually genius—never thought of that. My only worry is, will I cringe at my own voice later? Also, does anyone else get paranoid about accidentally filming their feet for half the video? Maybe that's just me...

Colored zip ties are supposed to make things easier, but I swear half the time I forget what color was for what anyway. Ended up just labeling pipes with a Sharpie in the end—less artsy, more practical. As for filming, I get it. Tried recording myself tracing a leak once and all you could see was my knees and a lot of swearing. The cringe is real, but at least it's useful when you need to remember which valve does what.
