I get the appeal of sticking with pen and paper, but I kinda like having a digital backup too. I’ve lost my fair share of notebooks to water damage or just plain misplacing them during a project. I started snapping pics of my labels and notes, then dumping them in a Google Drive folder. Not as fancy as an app, but at least if my phone dies, I can still pull it up on my laptop later. Maybe not perfect, but it’s saved me a headache or two when I couldn’t find my “master list.”
I hear you on losing notebooks—had one fall in a crawlspace puddle last winter, and that was the end of my “system.” I’ve tried a few apps, but honestly, snapping pics and tossing them in a cloud folder is just quicker when you’re in the middle of a job. Sometimes I’ll even voice record quick notes if my hands are too grubby for typing. Not perfect, but it beats rewriting everything from memory.
Had a similar disaster with a leaky basement—lost a whole binder of wiring diagrams. After that, I started using my phone more, but honestly, half the time my gloves are too filthy to even unlock it. Ended up scribbling notes on masking tape and sticking them to the inside of my toolbox lid... Not high-tech, but at least they don’t drown.
Masking tape notes—now that’s clever. I’ve tried snapping pics of labels or valve setups, but then I end up scrolling through a million random photos when I need them. Has anyone found a way to organize plumbing info digitally that actually works in the middle of a messy job? Or is low-tech just the way to go for stuff like this?
Honestly, I’ve tried a bunch of apps and digital notes, but when you’re elbow-deep in a crawlspace, pulling out your phone just isn’t practical. Masking tape and a Sharpie still win for me. Has anyone actually found a digital tool that doesn’t slow you down or get lost in the shuffle?
