I've had mixed results with epoxy putty myself. Patched a small leak on a copper pipe in my basement once, and it seemed solid at first. But after about six months, it started dripping again—slowly at first, then more noticeably. I think temperature fluctuations down there didn't help much either.
Honestly, I feel like epoxy is good if you're stuck on a weekend or need to hold off until payday, but it's not something I'd rely on long-term. Eventually, I did what you did and replaced the whole section. It was a bit of a hassle, but now I don't have to worry about it randomly springing another leak.
So yeah, epoxy putty can buy you some time, but if you're looking for peace of mind... replacing the pipe is probably the better route.
