Not sure I totally agree about waiting for “clear signs of blockage” before digging.

Digging is kind of a last resort unless you’ve got clear signs of blockage.
I get not wanting to tear up the yard, but when I had water pooling in my basement, it turned out to be a cracked pipe underground that wasn’t showing any obvious signs—no slow drains, no weird smells, nothing. I only found it because I got a camera inspection. Sometimes the sneaky stuff is actually below ground and you can’t see it until it’s too late. Maybe it’s just my luck, but I’d rather check early than end up with a bigger mess.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’d be careful about jumping straight to digging or even camera inspections unless you’ve ruled out the basics first. When I had water in my basement, it turned out to be a gutter issue—downspouts dumping water right next to the foundation. Before spending on inspections or tearing up the yard, I’d check grading, gutters, and sump pump function. If those are all good and you’re still seeing water, then yeah, maybe it’s time to look underground. Just my two cents... sometimes the simplest stuff gets overlooked.

Totally agree—jumping to the big stuff right away can get expensive fast. One thing I’d add: after checking gutters and grading, I always run a hose around the foundation to see if water sneaks in anywhere obvious. Sometimes it’s just a tiny crack or window well issue you’d never notice otherwise... Found that out the hard way last summer. If all that looks good, then yeah, maybe time to check drains or call in a pro, but no sense spending money until you’ve ruled out the cheap fixes.

That hose trick is a lifesaver, seriously. I did something similar last spring—turns out the “mystery puddle” in our basement was just from a clogged window well full of soggy leaves. Felt pretty silly after stressing about needing a new sump pump. Sometimes it really is just the little stuff. I’m all for fixing what you can see before calling in the cavalry... and saving a few bucks for something more fun, like plants or solar lights.

Honestly, I get the “fix what you can see” approach, but sometimes that’s how folks end up with bigger headaches down the line. You said,

“I’m all for fixing what you can see before calling in the cavalry...”
—which is fair, but those sneaky drain issues can hide out for ages and cause way more damage than a clogged window well. Had a job last month where someone kept clearing leaves, but the real culprit was a cracked exterior drain pipe. By the time they called me, it was a mess. Sometimes it pays to poke around a bit deeper, even if it feels like overkill at first.
