Water pooling in basement—could it be a sneaky drain issue?

Had a similar situation last month—water pooling by the washer, but turned out to be a slow floor drain, not a leak at all. Sometimes it’s just gunk or lint building up over time. I usually start by pouring a bucket of water down the drain to see how fast it goes. If it’s slow, I’ll snake it or use a wet vac. Ever notice any gurgling sounds from your drains when other fixtures run? Sometimes that’s a hint there’s a partial clog or venting issue messing with flow.

Yeah, I’ve heard those weird gurgles before and it always makes me nervous. Last time, it was just a bunch of lint and soap scum slowing things down. I tried the bucket test too—cheap and easy way to check before calling anyone. Wet vacs are a lifesaver if you’ve got one. Just gotta stay on top of the cleaning or it sneaks up on you.

Those gurgling sounds always make me think my house is trying to talk to me... and it’s never good news. I had a similar thing last year—turned out the main stack was half-blocked with who-knows-what (kids and their “flushable” wipes, right?). Wet vacs are great, but I swear by a cheap drain snake too. It’s gross, but oddly satisfying when you pull out a wad of mystery goo and suddenly everything drains like new. Just don’t forget to check the vent pipes on the roof—mine was full of leaves once and that messed up the whole system.

Ever tried running water in all the fixtures at once to see if the gurgling gets worse? Sometimes it’s not just a clog but a venting issue, especially if you’ve got leaves or even a bird’s nest up there. Did you notice any weird smells too, or just the slow drains?

Running all the fixtures at once is a solid troubleshooting step—definitely helps pinpoint whether it’s a vent issue or just a stubborn clog. If the gurgling gets worse with multiple taps running, odds are good you’ve got a venting problem. I’ve seen cases where a blocked vent stack (sometimes just a wad of leaves or even a squirrel’s handiwork) throws the whole system off. That negative pressure can pull traps dry, which leads to those nasty smells you mentioned.

One thing I’d add: check if you’re hearing gurgling from fixtures farthest from the main stack, like basement sinks or showers. That’s usually a dead giveaway the vent isn’t doing its job. Also, if you’re noticing slow drainage across multiple fixtures, especially on lower levels, it could mean your main drain line has a partial blockage or even a belly (sag) that’s collecting water.

If you’re comfortable getting up on the roof, a quick visual on the vent stack can sometimes save a lot of guesswork. Just watch your footing—those roofs get slippery fast. Sometimes, even a garden hose down the vent clears minor blockages. But yeah, if there’s any sewage odor, definitely don’t ignore it... that can point to more serious issues like a broken trap or even a cracked pipe behind the wall.
