Had the same headache with an under-sink install a few years back—thought it’d be a quick job, but one rusty fitting later and I was at the hardware store twice in one afternoon. Countertop filter I use now just screws onto the faucet, no drama. It’s not pretty, but I’d rather have that than risk a leak under the cabinet. Only downside is losing a chunk of counter, but I’ll take that trade-off any day.

I hear you on the leaks—nothing like discovering a puddle under the sink at midnight. Personally, I still prefer the under-sink ones for aesthetics, but yeah, those old fittings can turn a “quick job” into an all-day affair. Counter space is precious though... tough call.

Leaks under the sink are a nightmare, especially in rentals—tenants never spot them until there’s already water damage. I get the appeal of countertop filters for that reason alone. Still, I’ve had more complaints about “ugly hoses” than actual leaks. Under-sink installs can be a pain if the plumbing’s old, but once it’s done, you forget it’s even there. Counter space is always at a premium though... can’t win either way.

- Ugly hoses are the bane of my existence. I swear, people notice them faster than a puddle under the cabinet.
- Under-sink installs can be a wrestling match with 30-year-old pipes, but once you win, it’s out of sight, out of mind.
- Countertop filters? Easy to set up, but then you’re playing Tetris with your toaster and coffee maker.

Ever had a tenant try to “fix” a leak themselves and make it worse? That’s a whole other circus...

I get why people hate the “ugly hoses,” but honestly, I’d rather deal with a visible hose than crawl under the sink for an hour. Under-sink units sound great once they’re in, but if you ever need to swap a filter or fix a drip, it’s back to contorting yourself around pipes. Countertop filters might be awkward, but at least you can move them around. Maybe it’s just me, but I think the minor inconvenience of countertop clutter beats a potential plumbing headache.
