Teflon tape alone rarely cuts it, especially on those cheap brass threads—pipe dope’s been my go-to for years now. It’s messy, but at least I’m not chasing leaks every other week.

Man, I hear you on the pipe dope. I used to be a Teflon-only guy until I got tired of crawling under sinks at 2am because of that “just a drip.” Ever tried the blue monster tape? It’s thicker, but honestly, even that doesn’t save you from those bargain-bin fittings. Curious—do you ever use both tape and dope together, or is that just overkill?

And yeah, routine checks... learned the hard way after a “minor” leak soaked through my neighbor’s ceiling. Never again.

I’ve actually doubled up with tape and dope on a few stubborn connections—especially when I was installing my booster pump. Some folks say it’s overkill, but honestly, I’d rather deal with a little mess than a surprise leak. Those cheap threads are unforgiving... and yeah, Blue Monster helps, but it’s not magic. Learned that lesson after thinking “just one more turn” would do the trick—ended up splitting the fitting.

Had a similar situation when I swapped out a pressure tank last year. Those plastic threads are just waiting to betray you, especially if you get a little too confident with the wrench. I’m all for doubling up on tape and dope—better a messy joint than water dripping into the drywall. Learned my lesson after thinking “hand tight plus a quarter turn” was gospel... ended up chasing leaks for days. Sometimes overkill is just good insurance.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, doubling up on tape and dope can backfire, especially on plastic threads. Too much can actually cause splitting or make the joint harder to tighten evenly. I usually stick to just Teflon tape—three wraps, tops—and only use dope if the manufacturer specs say it’s okay for plastic. Overtightening’s a killer with those fittings... seen more ruined threads than leaks from under-taping. Sometimes less is more, depending on the material.

Couldn’t agree more—learned that the hard way on my first booster pump install. It’s wild how just a little too much elbow grease can turn a simple job into a headache. Less really is more with plastic threads, even if it feels counterintuitive when you’re worried about leaks. Good call sticking to what the manufacturer says.
