Sudden cold showers: what am I missing with my heater?

“Seems like they’re more sensitive than the actual heater sometimes.”

Totally get that. Mixing valves are like the drama queens of plumbing - one little bit of scale and they throw a fit. I’ve swapped mine twice in five years thanks to hard water. Honestly, flushing the heater every few months helps a bit, but it’s always something... I swear, if it’s not the valve, it’s the aerators or the dishwasher filter getting all crusty. Hard water life, right?

That’s the truth. I had one seize up mid-winter, right after a 12-hour shift - nothing like a freezing shower to wake you up. Ended up cracking it open and finding it packed with scale, even though I’d flushed the heater a few months before. Sometimes I think the valves are more trouble than the heater itself. Hard water just finds every weak spot, doesn’t it?

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from - mixing valves can be a pain, especially with hard water. But in my experience, the heater itself is usually the bigger headache long-term. Valves are easier to swap out or clean, but when a tank goes or the elements get caked in scale, that’s a whole different level of hassle (and expense). I’ve had tenants call about cold showers and it’s almost always something in the heater, not the valve. Maybe it depends on the brand or local water, but I’d still keep an eye on both.

Yeah, I totally get your point - valves are way less intimidating to deal with than a heater full of scale. Still, I’ve seen a few cases where a sticky mixing valve was the culprit, especially right after someone fiddled with the temp settings. Hard water just makes everything trickier... but you’re spot on, once the tank or element goes, you’re in for a real mess. Just wish manufacturers made these things easier to clean out without tearing half the unit apart.

- Totally agree, dealing with scale is a nightmare.
- I’ve had to replace a heating element once because it was just caked in calcium - couldn’t believe how much buildup there was after only a few years.
- The mixing valve thing is interesting... do you think those inline filters actually help much with hard water, or are they just a bandaid?
- Wish there was a way to flush the tank without needing three different tools and a prayer.
- Ever tried one of those tankless units? Wondering if they’re less prone to this kind of mess.
