I get the worry about plastic handles, but I’ve actually had more trouble with the metal ones seizing up over time, especially in older houses. Ever tried using a little silicone grease on the valve stems? Makes a big difference for me. About the “lead-free” brass—do you think the weight test really tells you much? I’ve picked up some heavy fittings that still felt kind of cheap once installed. Maybe it’s just hit or miss with brands these days...

Yeah, the weight thing is kind of a joke these days. I’ve picked up “lead-free” brass that felt like it should be solid, but then you install it and it’s just... meh. Sometimes I wonder if they’re just mixing in whatever scrap metal they’ve got lying around. I’d rather have something lighter but actually durable, honestly.

Silicone grease is a lifesaver for stuck valves, though. I switched to it after fighting with a stuck shower handle for way too long. WD-40 did nothing, but the silicone stuff actually kept things moving for months. As for plastic handles, I get why people avoid them, but at least they don’t corrode. I guess it’s a trade-off—pick your battles, right? At this point, I just want something that won’t fall apart or poison my water. Not too much to ask...

Honestly, it feels like finding hardware that checks both those boxes is getting harder every year. Have you ever tried any of the newer composite handles? I’m curious if they actually hold up or if it’s just trading one problem for another. Also, do you notice any difference in water taste after swapping out parts, or is that just me being paranoid?

Right? It’s wild how much “progress” seems to mean more plastic and less reliability. I’ve tried a couple of those composite handles—one brand held up okay for about a year, but the other started cracking around the base in six months. Maybe I just got unlucky, but it felt like trading corrosion for brittleness.

About the water taste thing: you’re not just being paranoid. I swear, after swapping out a brass valve for one of those “lead-free” alternatives, my water had this weird plasticky aftertaste for weeks. Maybe it’s just my imagination, but it makes you wonder what’s actually leaching into the water. Sometimes I think the old-school metal stuff was better, even with its issues.

Honestly, if I could find something that lasted more than a couple years and didn’t mess with the water, I’d pay extra. Right now it feels like every fix is just buying time until the next part fails...

You’re not alone there. I’ve lost count of how many “upgraded” parts I’ve swapped out in rentals, only to be back at it a year or two later. The plastic stuff is supposed to be progress, but half the time it just feels like planned obsolescence. I get that old-school brass had its issues, but at least you could trust it to last a decade or two.

The water taste thing is real, too. Had a tenant complain about a weird aftertaste after we put in one of those so-called eco valves. Sure enough, it faded… eventually. Makes you wonder what’s actually safe these days.

I will say, sometimes the higher-end hardware (even if it’s pricey) holds up better. Not always, but enough that I’ll still take the gamble over another bargain-bin handle. It’s frustrating, though—feels like we’re paying more for less durability every year.
