Half flush never seems to work right - am I missing something?

I hear you on the stubborn tanks - some of them seem to have a mind of their own. But I gotta say, I’ve had a few that looked like lost causes, and then a weird little fix did the trick. One time, I was about ready to rip out this old dual-flush setup in a rental because the half flush just dribbled out like it was apologizing for existing. Tenants were leaving notes like “toilet sad, please help.” I’d already tried all the usual suspects: float height, chain length, new seals. Nothing.

Then, just for kicks, I swapped out the flapper for a slightly heavier aftermarket one (think it was meant for a different brand, honestly), and suddenly the half flush started working like it actually meant it. No idea why - maybe the original was too light and kept closing too fast? Sometimes it’s just a matter of finding the right combination, even if it feels like you’re playing toilet Jenga.

I get why you’d want to just go full-flush only and be done with it - less hassle, less explaining to tenants who think there’s a secret handshake required to use the toilet. But if you’re feeling stubborn (or bored), sometimes those oddball tweaks pay off. Worst case, you waste an hour and get some good stories out of it... or at least a reason to grumble about plumbing design over lunch.

Man, dual-flush toilets are such a gamble. I’ve had one where the half flush was basically just a suggestion - barely moved anything. Ended up finding out there was a tiny bit of buildup right where the flush valve seals, so it wasn’t seating right and water just trickled out. Cleaned it up, worked better, but honestly, I still don’t trust it. Sometimes I think these things are designed to make us question our life choices... or at least our plumbing skills.

Not sure I’d call dual-flush a total gamble, but I get where you’re coming from. The half flush is all about water level and valve timing - if either’s even a bit off, it’s not gonna do much. You mentioned buildup at the flush valve, but have you checked the fill level in the tank? Sometimes folks set it too low trying to save water, but that just makes the half flush useless.

Sometimes I think these things are designed to make us question our life choices... or at least our plumbing skills.

Honestly, I’ve seen more issues from incorrect install or adjustment than actual design flaws. Not saying they’re perfect, but a properly set up dual-flush should work pretty reliably. Maybe give the float and cable a look if you’re still not happy with it.

I’ve had my fair share of “why did I even touch this thing?” moments with dual-flush toilets. There’s something about staring into the tank, float in one hand, screwdriver in the other, that really makes you question your life choices. I laughed at this:

Couldn’t agree more. I swear, half flushes are like the Goldilocks of plumbing - too much water and you’re wasting it, too little and you’re left with... well, disappointment. I once spent an entire Saturday fiddling with the fill valve on my aunt’s toilet because she was convinced it was “possessed.” Turns out, she’d set the water level so low that the half flush was basically just a polite suggestion to the bowl.

I do think most of the time it’s not a design issue, but man, some of these mechanisms are touchier than a cat in a bathtub. The cable on mine slipped off once and suddenly every flush was “full power” whether I liked it or not. Took me longer than I’d like to admit to figure out it wasn’t haunted.

If you haven’t already, try holding down the half-flush button for a second longer than usual. Some models need a little encouragement - like they’re shy or something. And yeah, double-check that float height. It’s amazing how a quarter inch can make all the difference between “works like a charm” and “why did I bother?”

Anyway, you’re definitely not alone in this. Dual-flush is great when it works, but when it doesn’t... well, let’s just say I keep a plunger nearby for moral support.

That’s honestly the most accurate description I’ve seen. I’ve messed with a few of these and it’s wild how sensitive they are. Sometimes I wonder if the “eco” part is just code for “good luck.” You’re not missing anything obvious - these things just have a mind of their own. At least you haven’t cracked the tank lid yet... that’s when it really gets fun.
