Half flush never seems to work right—am I missing something?

I’ve definitely had my share of “half flush fails”—it’s like a gamble every time. In my last place, the half flush was basically just a polite suggestion to the toilet, not an actual command. Ended up opening the tank and realized the chain was too loose, so it wasn’t lifting the valve enough. Tightened it up and suddenly it worked way better. Not perfect, but at least I wasn’t flushing twice every time. Sometimes it really is just a tiny tweak, though I agree, some of these budget models are hopeless no matter what you do.

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing with some of these so-called “eco” toilets. It’s like the half flush is just for show unless you get the mechanics dialed in. I do think a lot of people underestimate how much a tiny adjustment—like the chain or even the float—can make. But honestly, some of the cheaper models just don’t have the right design to make half flushes effective. I ended up spending a bit more for a dual-flush that actually works, and it’s saved a ton of water over time. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for, at least with toilets.

I’ve been called out to fix a bunch of these “eco” toilets, and honestly, sometimes it’s just the design holding them back. You can fiddle with the chain or float all day, but if the bowl shape or flush valve isn’t right, it’s never going to clear properly. Out of curiosity, has anyone actually managed to get a budget dual-flush working reliably, or is it always a matter of upgrading?

I get what you’re saying about the design being a big part of the problem, but I’m not totally convinced it’s always a lost cause with the cheaper dual-flush models. We put in a budget-friendly one last year (can’t remember the brand, but it was definitely on the lower end), and after a bit of trial and error, it’s been working pretty well. The half flush isn’t perfect for, you know, “bigger jobs,” but for most day-to-day stuff it does the trick. I did have to mess around with the water level and the seal a bit, though.

I wonder if some of it comes down to how people use them, too. My partner kept hitting the half flush for everything at first, and yeah, that led to some... unfortunate situations. Once we got used to when to use which button, things improved a lot. Not saying the design isn’t sometimes to blame—some of those bowls are just weirdly shaped and nothing helps—but I wouldn’t write off all the budget ones.

That said, I’ve seen a few where no amount of tweaking made a difference. Maybe it’s just luck of the draw? Or maybe some brands are just better at getting the basics right, even at a lower price point. Either way, I’d rather keep trying to make these work than go back to the old water-guzzlers. The savings add up, and honestly, I kind of like the challenge.

Same here. I had to fiddle with the float and the flapper thingy for a while before ours started behaving. It’s like a weird little science experiment every time. Have you noticed if certain brands just handle the “half flush” better? Ours is decent most days, but sometimes it’s like flipping a coin. Wondering if it’s worth upgrading eventually or if they all just need regular tweaking...
