Yeah, those moisture meters are a bit of a joke sometimes—I've seen 'em light up just from a patch of old spackle. Honestly, unless you’re seeing water stains or feeling dampness, it’s probably just the pipes doing their thing. Copper especially loves to make weird noises when it heats up. I’ve had folks panic over that hissing, but nine times outta ten, it’s nothing. Still, if you ever catch a whiff of that wet-dog smell or see bubbling paint, then it’s time to dig deeper. Otherwise, just keep an ear on it.

Had a call last winter where a homeowner was convinced their wall was about to burst because of a “snake-like hiss.” Turned out it was just the copper pipes expanding as the hot water kicked in—sounded way worse than it was. I do agree with you on moisture meters being finicky.

Same here. Unless you’re seeing actual stains or that musty smell, it’s usually just the plumbing settling in. Still, I always tell folks to trust their nose—smells rarely lie.

That’s too real. I can’t even count the number of times someone’s gotten freaked out over a meter reading, and it turned out to be nothing but leftover joint compound or even just humidity from a hot shower. Those copper pipes can be noisy, especially in older homes where they don’t have room to move. Like you said, if you’re not seeing water stains or that classic musty smell, it’s probably just the house settling in for the season. Still, never hurts to double-check if something feels off... better safe than sorry.

Honestly, I’ve lost count of how many times tenants have called me about “hissing” only for it to be the pipes doing their usual winter groaning. Here’s my quick-and-dirty checklist: check for visible leaks or damp spots, sniff for that telltale musty odor, and feel the wall—if it’s cold or wet, you might have an issue. Otherwise, it’s probably just the plumbing talking. Old houses love to make weird noises... keeps things interesting, I guess.

I hear you on the old house noises—mine sounds like it’s haunted half the winter. I’ve actually started keeping a cheap moisture meter around just to double-check if it’s just the pipes or something more sinister (like a slow leak behind the wall). Ever had those hissing sounds turn out to be something electrical, like a faulty outlet? I had that happen once and it threw me for a loop...
