Skipped a year once, too—thought I’d save time. Ended up with a leaky valve and a bunch of lukewarm showers. Not exactly the money-saver I hoped for. Funny how “maintenance-free” really means “maintenance-lite,” huh? Curious—has anyone actually gone longer than a year without issues, or is that just asking for trouble?

Title: What if you skipped a year of solar water heater upkeep?

I tried stretching it to about 18 months once, thinking, “How bad could it be?” Well, turns out, pretty bad. Ended up with mineral buildup that looked like something out of a geology exhibit and my hot water pressure tanked. Had to flush the whole system twice just to get it back to normal. Honestly, I think these things are a bit like cars—skip the oil change and you’re just asking for headaches down the road.

I get the temptation though. “Maintenance-free” is such a misleading phrase. Maybe if you live somewhere with super soft water and perfect weather, you could get away with it... but for most of us? Not worth the gamble. I’d rather spend an hour once a year than deal with cold showers and surprise repair bills.

Yeah, “maintenance-free” is one of those phrases that always makes me suspicious. I skipped a year once too, thinking it’d be fine since our water isn’t super hard. Big mistake—ended up with a weird rattling noise and the water started smelling off. Had to call someone in because I was worried about leaks. Honestly, even if it feels like overkill, I’d rather just do the yearly check and not risk it. Those repair bills add up fast.

Honestly, I get why you’d play it safe, but I’ve seen some heaters go several years with barely any issues, especially if the water’s not too rough. Sometimes it feels like the yearly checks are more about peace of mind than actual need. I mean, yeah, skipping can backfire, but not every system’s the same… Sometimes the “maintenance-free” claim isn’t total nonsense. Just depends how lucky you get, I guess.

Skipped a year once on my uncle’s old solar heater—mostly ‘cause he just kinda forgot. Nothing exploded or anything, but when we finally checked it, there was a weird buildup in one of the pipes. Didn’t kill the system, but it made the water pressure drop for a bit. Guess it’s like rolling dice… sometimes you’re fine, sometimes you get that one annoying issue that could’ve been caught early. I get tempted to skip stuff too, though, especially when everything seems to be running smooth.
