Been thinking about getting a solar water heater installed at home, but honestly, I'm kinda lost. Are they really as cost-effective and reliable as people say, or is it more hassle than it's worth? Curious if anyone here's had personal experience with them.

From my experience, solar water heaters can definitely pay off, but it depends a lot on your local climate and setup. Installed one about five years ago in a rental propertyβtenants loved the lower bills, and maintenance wasn't too bad. Just make sure you get a reputable installer, check your roof's exposure carefully (south-facing is ideal), and factor in occasional upkeep like antifreeze checks or panel cleaning. Overall, worth it in my book...just do your homework first.

Yeah, roof orientation is key. Mine faces slightly east, and while the solar heater still works fine, I probably don't get the max savings. Still glad I did it, but definitely something to consider beforehand.
Totally agree about orientation making a difference. Mine's southwest-ish, and it's been pretty solid overall. One thing I'd add is shadingβtrees or nearby buildings can really sneak up on you, especially in winter when the sun's lower... learned that the hard way, haha.
