A shutoff valve handle feels stiff
What’s a sensible limit for trying to turn a stiff faucet shutoff valve by hand? I’d expect some resistance, but a handle that feels seized seems like a different situation, and forcing it could turn a small nuisance into a leak.
Would you stop if it doesn’t move with gentle pressure, or is there a safe way to tell whether it’s just the handle that’s stiff? I’d also like to know what to do if moisture or corrosion is visible around the stem or connection, or if the valve starts leaking during an attempt.

If it won’t turn with gentle hand pressure, stop - don’t use pliers or add leverage. Stiffness alone can’t tell you whether the valve is safe to operate; visible moisture or corrosion around it is a reason not to keep testing it and to arrange plumbing help. If it starts leaking, stop turning it and get prompt help; treat an uncontrolled leak as urgent.
