One bad section doesn’t tell the whole sewer lateral story
A camera finding one damaged section makes a spot repair sound straightforward, but the rest of the lateral matters too. What evidence would make you comfortable limiting the work to that area, rather than replacing more of the line to avoid another excavation later?
I’d want to know whether the report shows sound pipe and joints elsewhere, or age-related defects that could make a localized repair a short-term fix. How much should pipe material and the condition of the remaining joints weigh against the added disruption of full-length replacement? Access, permits, and the amount of paving or landscaping that needs restoration could shift the balance as well.

For example, if a camera clearly shows one damaged section and the rest of the line and its joints look sound, I’d lean toward repairing just that area. If part of the lateral wasn’t visible, I wouldn’t count that as evidence it’s sound; I’d want that uncertainty clarified before treating a spot repair as the lower-risk choice.
I’d weigh the pattern of defects more than the pipe’s age or material by itself. If several remaining joints show similar deterioration, I’d be more willing to consider broader replacement even if the visible damage is localized; sound joints would make a spot repair seem more reasonable, even on older pipe.
If the rest of the line and its joints were clearly sound, I’d lean toward a spot repair more strongly when full replacement meant tearing up substantial paving or landscaping. The evidence about the pipe would still come first for me, but avoiding that extra restoration would tip a close call toward the smaller repair.
A narrow permit window or difficult access could make doing more work during the same excavation attractive, since returning later may mean repeating that disruption. But I wouldn’t treat the timing or access issue as evidence that sound-looking pipe needs replacement; I’d still want the camera findings to justify the added scope. If the remaining line looks sound, the practical constraint might change when to do the work without necessarily changing how much to replace.
