Good call on the plastic panels. I had a client who insisted on fabric barriers to save a few bucks, and sure enough, we were back digging it up within three years—roots tore right through it. Plastic's definitely sturdier underground, and like you said, trench prep is key. Learned that the hard way myself... digging twice is no fun. Glad it worked out for you!

Plastic barriers are solid, sure, but I've seen roots eventually find their way around or under them too. Honestly, best long-term fix I've found is choosing the right tree species and placement from the start... saves headaches down the road.

- Good call on species selection, definitely saves trouble later.
- Ever tried gravel trenches alongside barriers? I've seen roots struggle more with that combo.
- Either way, sounds like you've got a solid handle on it now... nice work.

Wish I'd known about gravel trenches earlier... I went the barrier-only route a couple years back thinking it'd be enough. Worked fine at first, but those stubborn roots eventually found their way around it. Ended up redoing the whole thing last summer—this time adding gravel trenches alongside the barrier. Definitely made a noticeable difference since then. Sounds like you've got it sorted now though, nice job staying ahead of it!

Wish I'd stumbled onto this thread sooner. I went with barriers alone too, thinking I was saving money and hassle. Worked great for about a year, then those sneaky roots just crept around the edges and popped up again. Ended up digging everything back up (not fun) and adding gravel trenches last spring. So far, so good—fingers crossed it stays that way.

One thing I'm still wondering about though... did you guys use any specific gravel size or type? I just grabbed whatever was cheapest at the local yard, but now I'm second-guessing if something coarser or finer might've been better. Curious if anyone noticed a difference based on gravel choice.
