Making sure your home’s pipes are up to code—how I do it

Metal mesh is underrated for this stuff. I used to swear by steel wool, but I got tired of poking my fingers every time I had to cram it in a weird spot. Last winter, I cut up some leftover hardware cloth and wedged it around a pipe gap, then sealed the edges with low-VOC caulk. Not glamorous, but it’s held up way better than foam ever did. I’m with you on the aesthetics—if the mice can’t see it, neither can I. Just make sure whatever you use is rust-resistant if it’s near any moisture. Learned that one the hard way...

Yeah, I’ve been down the steel wool road too—those finger jabs are no joke. I usually go for hardware cloth now as well, but I’ll admit I still use expanding foam sometimes for quick fixes (even though it’s a pain to clean up).

Been there. Had a job where someone used plain steel mesh and it just turned into a rusty mess after one winter. Stainless or galvanized saves a lot of headaches later on.

Yeah, rust is a sneaky one—caught me off guard the first time I patched a crawlspace vent with regular mesh. By spring it was basically orange dust. These days, I always double-check for stainless or at least galvanized, especially if it’s anywhere near condensation or leaks. If you’re sealing around pipes, I’ve found layering hardware cloth and then sealing gaps with foam works pretty well. Just gotta be careful not to block airflow if it’s a vented area... learned that the hard way too.

Yeah, rust is a pain. I made the same mistake with regular mesh—thought I was saving a few bucks, but it just crumbled after one winter. Stainless or galvanized is definitely worth it, especially in damp spots. I like your tip about not blocking airflow. I once sealed up a vent too tight and ended up with a musty crawlspace... lesson learned. It’s always the little things that get you.

Totally get what you mean about the mesh—cheap stuff just doesn’t last. I’m still figuring out which materials are worth the extra cost, but sounds like stainless is the way to go. Airflow’s tricky... I keep second-guessing if I’ve sealed things up too much or not enough. Glad I’m not the only one learning as I go.
