Hardware cloth is definitely a solid choice, especially if you're dealing with larger debris like pine needles. I've seen setups where folks use galvanized hardware cloth, and rust hasn't been much of an issue—at least not short-term. But over several years, even galvanized metal can start showing signs of corrosion, particularly at cut edges or bends. If you're in a humid or coastal area, you might want to keep an eye on it periodically.

One thing I'd suggest is checking the mesh size carefully. Too fine and you'll get clogging issues from smaller debris and algae buildup; too large and you risk letting in stuff that'll foul your storage tanks or filters downstream. Aluminum gutter guards are decent too, but I've found they sometimes warp under heavy snow loads or ice dams—depends on your climate.

And yeah, UV-resistant barrels are a must. Had a client who tried saving money with regular plastic drums... ended up replacing them after just two summers because they cracked badly from sun exposure. Definitely worth investing in quality materials upfront to avoid headaches later on.

Couldn't agree more with this point. I've seen a few setups fail prematurely because people underestimated the impact of UV exposure and weathering. One neighbor of mine tried using standard plastic drums for rainwater storage, similar to your client's experience, and they ended up brittle and cracked after just a couple summers. He eventually switched to UV-resistant barrels and hasn't had any issues since.

Regarding mesh size, your advice is spot-on. I initially went too fine with my gutter guards, thinking I'd keep everything out... but it turned into a maintenance nightmare with constant clogging from pollen and algae growth. After switching to something slightly larger, things improved dramatically.

Also, great caution about galvanized hardware cloth—coastal areas really accelerate corrosion. Stainless steel mesh might be pricier upfront but could save you from replacing parts down the road if you're close to saltwater or have high humidity year-round.

Overall, sounds like you're on the right track. Good luck with your setup!

Good points overall, but I'm not totally convinced stainless steel mesh is always worth the extra cost. I live about 10 miles from the coast—humid summers, salty breeze occasionally—and I've had galvanized hardware cloth on my rain barrels for almost three years now. Sure, there's a bit of surface rust, but nothing serious enough to compromise function yet. Maybe if you're right on the beach it's different, but for most suburban setups, galvanized might hold up better than you'd think.

Also, about the UV-resistant barrels: yeah, they're great, but if your storage area is shaded or protected by a shed or something, standard drums can last surprisingly long. My brother-in-law has regular plastic barrels tucked under an overhang, and they've been fine for five years and counting. So, I guess it really depends on your specific setup and location... sometimes premium materials are essential, other times they're just nice-to-have.

Totally agree about galvanized mesh being fine for most suburban setups. I'm about 15 miles inland, and my galvanized screens have lasted nearly five years now—just minor rust spots, nothing structural. One thing I'd add though: if you're collecting water for veggie gardens or drinking, stainless steel might be worth the peace of mind since it won't leach rust particles over time. But yeah, UV barrels are nice but not always necessary...mine are tucked behind the garage and still going strong after six years.

Good point on stainless steel for drinking water—definitely worth the extra cost there. I've seen galvanized mesh hold up pretty well in suburban setups too, but one thing I'd add is to regularly check the mesh after heavy storms. Leaves and debris can pile up quick, and if left unchecked, you get standing water and corrosion accelerates. Learned that the hard way when I had to replace mine after just three years because I neglected basic maintenance.

Also agree UV barrels aren't always necessary if they're shaded. Mine are tucked under some trees; going on seven years now without issues. Just make sure they're properly sealed—mosquitoes find their way into any tiny gap, trust me...
