how much rain can you actually catch and reuse at home?

I just stumbled across this random article mentioning that a typical home roof (around 1,000 sq ft) can collect something like 600 gallons of water from just an inch of rain. Kinda blew my mind, honestly—I always assumed you'd need super heavy rainfall to make collecting rainwater worthwhile. Makes me wonder how practical it is for daily use or gardening... anyone here tried setting something like this up at home? Curious if it's really as useful as it sounds or if there are hidden hassles.

I've set up a basic rain barrel system at my place—nothing fancy, just a barrel under the downspout. It's surprisingly useful for watering plants and the garden. Only hassle is keeping leaves and debris out, but a simple mesh filter helps with that. Definitely practical for gardening.
