How often do you actually test your main water shut-off?

I’ve seen way too many folks skip this until it’s too late. I check mine every three months, tops. Had a job last year where the valve was so seized, the handle snapped right off—water everywhere, total mess. If you’re already moving it twice a year, you’re ahead of most people. Just don’t force it if it’s stuck—sometimes you need a pro to avoid breaking something expensive.

I get where you’re coming from—waiting until it’s stuck is just asking for trouble. I usually check mine about once a year, maybe twice if I remember, but honestly, I’ve never had it seize up. Maybe I’m just lucky, or maybe the valve’s newer than most. I do worry about forcing it, though. Last time, it was a bit stiff and I started second-guessing myself—wasn’t sure if I should spray a little WD-40 or just leave it alone. Anybody ever had luck loosening a sticky valve without risking damage? Or is it basically a call-the-plumber situation once it’s tough to turn?

I've run into that same dilemma. Honestly, WD-40 can help a bit on the stem, but you want to avoid spraying it directly into the valve body—it can mess with the seals. What’s worked for me is gently working the handle back and forth, just a little at a time, instead of forcing it all at once. If it’s really stuck, I usually stop before risking a break. Has anyone tried using a silicone-based lubricant instead? Wondering if that’s any safer for the seals.

I’ve always been wary of WD-40 near any plumbing seals—had a plumber chew me out about that years ago. Silicone spray’s definitely safer, but even then, I’m careful not to overdo it. I usually just work the valve every six months or so, and if it’s stubborn, I’ll try a little silicone on the stem only. Ever had one seize up completely though? That’s when things get interesting... Wondering if anyone’s actually swapped out an old valve themselves or just called in the pros.

Had one seize up on me last winter, right when I needed it most—classic timing. I’d been doing the “turn it every six months” routine for a while, but apparently, the previous owner hadn’t touched it in decades. When I tried to close it, the handle wouldn’t budge. Gave it a little more muscle and ended up snapping the stem clean off. Not my proudest moment.

I did try to swap it myself after watching a few videos and reading up on compression vs. sweat fittings. The thing is, my main shut-off was soldered copper, not threaded or compression. That meant torch work, which I’m usually comfortable with for smaller jobs, but this was right at the foundation wall and I started picturing all sorts of worst-case scenarios—scorched framing, melted insulation, you name it.

Ended up calling a plumber after all. He had the old valve out and a new ball valve in within about 40 minutes (and didn’t burn down my house). Cost me more than DIY would’ve, but honestly, peace of mind was worth it that time.

I do agree with you on WD-40—had a plumber tell me once that petroleum-based sprays can swell rubber seals over time. Silicone spray seems safer, but like you said, less is more. These days I just give the handle a gentle turn every few months and keep an eye out for any leaks or stiffness.

If your valve’s threaded or compression style and you’re comfortable shutting off water at the street (and have decent access), swapping it isn’t too bad. Soldered ones are another story unless you’re really confident with a torch in tight spaces.

Funny how something as simple as a shut-off valve can turn into such an adventure...
