Trying to wrap my head around the best way to get this permit thing sorted. The city offers two options for checking out new plumbing work—either have an inspector come over and poke around in person, or do a virtual inspection where you show 'em everything on a video call. I’m kinda torn. On one hand, in-person seems more thorough (plus, less chance of tech glitches), but virtual sounds way more convenient.

Has anyone tried both? Does the inspector miss stuff on video, or is it just as good? I’m worried I’ll mess up the camera angle and they’ll make me redo it, but also not super excited about waiting around all day for someone to show up. Which way would you go and why?

I just wrapped up the paperwork for my bathroom remodel, and honestly, I was dreading the whole permit thing way more than I needed to. I kept hearing horror stories about endless delays and nitpicky inspectors, but it actually went pretty smooth. The city office was surprisingly helpful, and the inspector even gave me a couple of tips for future projects (like, apparently, you can’t just swap out a tub for a shower without updating the venting—who knew?).

I feel like getting that little stamp of approval is a bigger win than finishing the tile work, weirdly enough. Anyone else have a permit process that went better than expected? Or maybe you’ve got a funny story about a weird rule you ran into?

Turns out I needed a permit from city hall, and man, the paperwork was a maze. Spent half my day trying to figure out what forms they wanted and how to fill them out properly. Felt like I was applying for citizenship or something, lol. Has anyone else had to deal with this kind of bureaucratic runaround for home repairs?

I've been working as a plumber's assistant for about two years now, and recently decided to finally bite the bullet and go for my license. I figured it'd be straightforward enough—study up, take a test, maybe fill out some paperwork. But man, was I wrong.

First off, the amount of hours you need logged under supervision is way more than I expected. I mean, I get it—you don't want just anyone messing around with pipes and gas lines—but still, it feels like forever. Then there's the studying part. Bought one of those online prep courses that promised to make things easy-peasy. Um...not exactly. The material was dense, dry as toast, and honestly felt kinda outdated in spots. Like, do we really need to memorize every single obscure plumbing code from 1987? (Okay, slight exaggeration there, but you know what I mean.)

Anyway, after weeks of cramming and stressing out over practice tests, I finally took the exam last weekend. It wasn't impossible or anything, but definitely tougher than I'd anticipated. Some questions were straightforward enough—basic safety stuff—but others seemed designed just to trip you up or something.

Now I'm waiting on results and feeling kinda anxious about it all. Part of me wonders if it's even worth all this hassle. Sure, having a license opens doors and probably means better pay down the line...but I've also met plenty of plumbers who seem to do just fine without one.

Curious if anyone else here has gone through this process recently or is thinking about it? Did you find getting licensed made a big difference in your career opportunities or income? Or did it end up being more trouble than it's worth?
