I’m a little wary of space heaters in crawlspaces, though. Maybe I’m just paranoid, but I always picture a raccoon knocking one over and starting a bonfire under the house.

That’s not paranoid at all—my neighbor actually had a possum chew through an extension cord once, so I get the worry. Heat tape’s been my go-to for the pipes that run along the north wall. Not pretty, like you said, but it works. I do wonder about long-term safety with those, though—do you leave yours plugged in all winter or just during cold snaps? I’ve heard mixed things about whether it’s okay to keep them running nonstop.

Also, has anyone tried those insulated pipe boxes? Saw them at the hardware store last year but wasn’t sure if they’re worth the hassle compared to just wrapping everything up.

Heat tape’s a solid choice, but you’re right to think about safety. Here’s what I’ve seen work best:

- If you’ve got the self-regulating kind, it’s designed to stay plugged in all winter. It’ll only draw power when temps drop, so you’re not wasting electricity or risking overheating.
- The older constant-wattage stuff? I’d only run that during actual cold snaps. Those can get hot and don’t adjust, so they’re more of a fire risk if left on 24/7.
- Always check the manufacturer’s instructions—some tapes are pickier than others.

As for those insulated pipe boxes, I’ve installed a few for folks who had chronic freeze-ups. They’re bulky and a pain to fit in tight spots, but they do add another layer of protection. Honestly, just wrapping with foam and taping the seams does almost as much unless you’ve got a real problem area. The boxes are overkill for most homes unless your crawlspace is wide open to the wind.

Had a squirrel chew through my heat tape once...so yeah, critters are always the wild card.

You nailed it with the self-regulating heat tape advice. I used to stress about leaving mine plugged in, but once I switched to the newer type, it was a game changer—no more crawling under the house every cold snap. I agree about those insulated boxes being a pain. Tried one last year and honestly, foam wrap plus some good tape did just as well for my pipes. Critters are always a wildcard... had a raccoon yank down my insulation once. Just gotta stay one step ahead, I guess.

I hear you on the critters—last winter, a squirrel chewed through my pipe wrap and made a nest right in the crawlspace. What finally worked for me was a combo: self-regulating heat tape, then foam insulation, then a layer of chicken wire around the whole thing. Not pretty, but it’s held up so far. I’ve tried those insulated boxes too, but honestly, for the price, the DIY route just makes more sense. Just gotta check it every fall before things freeze up... learned that the hard way one year when I skipped it and ended up with a split pipe.

Yeah, squirrels and mice seem to have a sixth sense for finding the warmest spots in a crawlspace. I’ve seen folks spend a fortune on those insulated boxes, but honestly, they’re not foolproof either—especially if you’ve got persistent critters. I’m with you on the chicken wire; it’s not pretty, but it works better than most people think.

One thing I’d add: after years of dealing with split pipes and chewed insulation, I started using metal conduit over the heat tape and foam. It’s a pain to install, but rodents just can’t chew through it. Not saying everyone needs to go that far, but if you’ve got repeat offenders, it might be worth the trouble.

And yeah, skipping the fall check is tempting when life gets busy... but every time I’ve tried to cut corners, it’s come back to bite me. Literally had a frozen pipe burst right before Thanksgiving one year—never again.
