"A quick 20-second phone video showing how to disconnect hoses and close valve handles seems to stick better than written instructions or static photos."
That's a smart move...I've noticed similar results. People remember visuals better, especially videos. I'm usually cautious about relying solely on explanations—tenants genuinely appreciate seeing exactly what's expected. Keep fighting that winter battle, you're not alone!
Totally agree on the video thing—saved my bacon last winter. I left written instructions for my brother-in-law when he house-sat...came home to a flooded basement because he misunderstood "close the valve." This year, I sent him a quick video demo instead. No floods yet, fingers crossed. Visuals just seem to click better, especially for plumbing stuff where one wrong twist can ruin your weekend.

Haha, isn't that the truth? Ever tried explaining the difference between clockwise and counterclockwise over the phone to someone panicking about a leak? Good luck with that. Quick question though—anyone have tips for marking valves clearly for winter vs summer? I've tried colored tape, but it always peels off or fades. Maybe paint markers or something more permanent...?

Haha, been there more times than I'd like to admit. Honestly, I'd skip tape altogether—it's never reliable long-term. Paint markers are decent, but I've had better luck engraving small "W" and "S" letters into the valve handles themselves. Permanent, clear, and no fading issues. Plus, it keeps tenants from accidentally peeling or removing labels...which happens more often than you'd think.
Haha, engraving is pretty clever, hadn't thought of that. I've mostly just slapped on bright-colored zip ties—red for hot, blue for cold. Cheap, easy, and even panicked callers seem to get it right away...usually.
