"Eventually, I realized a small draft was sneaking in through a gap around an old vent."

Interesting point about drafts—I hadn't really considered airflow as a factor until recently. First winter in my new place, I thought insulation and heat tape would cover everything, but nope... still had issues with pipes freezing up near the kitchen sink. After some poking around, I noticed cold air coming in from under the cabinets. Turns out there was a gap around the plumbing entry point that wasn't sealed properly. Once I patched that up, things improved noticeably.

Now I'm wondering—are there other sneaky spots people commonly overlook? Maybe attic spaces or crawlspaces letting cold air seep into walls? Seems like chasing down drafts could save more headaches (and money) than just relying on heat tape alone. Curious if anyone else has had similar experiences with hidden drafts causing plumbing trouble...

I had a similar issue last winter—thought I'd covered everything, but turns out the attic hatch wasn't sealed properly. Cold air was sneaking down into the wall cavity behind the bathroom pipes. Sealed that up and haven't had issues since... definitely worth checking attic spaces too.

Haha, attic hatch strikes again... who knew something so small could cause such a headache? I'm a first-time homeowner and honestly, every season feels like a new level in some weird plumbing video game—just when I think I've got it figured out, bam, surprise leak or frozen pipe. Did you notice drafts or anything before you found the attic issue? Because now you've got me wondering if my attic hatch is secretly plotting against me too. Guess I'll be climbing up there this weekend to check things out. Thanks for the heads-up though, glad sealing it worked out for you. Gives me hope that someday I'll actually know what I'm doing around here... maybe.

Drafts are definitely a common giveaway, especially around attic hatches or even recessed lighting fixtures. If you're already noticing chilly spots or temperature fluctuations, it's worth checking your insulation and sealing any gaps you find up there. Also, since you're climbing up anyway, take a peek at your pipes—adding some pipe insulation can save you from those surprise leaks down the road. Good luck this weekend... sounds like you've got a solid game plan!

Drafts are usually a good sign, but honestly, I've seen plenty of attic issues without noticeable drafts at first. Sometimes it's just moisture buildup or condensation around pipes that tips you off. Definitely second the pipe insulation suggestion—cheap fix, big payoff. And if you're already poking around up there, might as well check your vent stacks too... critters love making homes in those things this time of year. Good luck!
