Burst pipe panic: what would you do?

That’s exactly why my old boss swore by the manual valves. He’d say, “Tech’s great till it isn’t.” I’ve only ever had to shut one off in a rush once, and my hands were shaking so much I nearly dropped the wrench. Did you ever end up going back to manual after that storm, or just stick with the smart setup as backup?

That line made me laugh - my partner says the same thing every time our “smart” thermostat freezes up. I still keep the manual shutoff wrench hanging by the door, just in case. Nothing like a little panic to remind you where your priorities are, right?

That’s smart. I’ve never fully trusted those “smart” systems either - too many points of failure. Curious, have you ever actually had to use the manual shutoff in a real emergency, or is it more peace of mind? I keep thinking about putting in an automatic shutoff valve, but then I wonder if that’s just another thing to break when you need it most...

I’ve actually had to use the manual shutoff once - middle of winter, pipe burst in the crawlspace. The “smart” leak sensor didn’t catch it (battery was dead, of course), but the old wrench did the trick. I get the appeal of automation, but honestly, I trust mechanical solutions more when things go sideways. Less to go wrong, and you know exactly what’s happening. Peace of mind’s great, but sometimes it’s just about what works when you’re half-awake at 2am...

I totally get the appeal of having a wrench handy - my dad always said, “If you can’t fix it with a wrench or duct tape, you’re in trouble.” But I keep wondering if I’m missing out by not trusting the smart stuff more. Are those leak sensors ever really reliable? Or is it just another thing to check batteries on? I like the idea of tech helping out, but I’m not sure I’d sleep better knowing my phone might alert me at 2am... or not. Anyone actually had one of those smart things save the day, or is it mostly just backup for the old-school shutoff?
