"I'd rather invest in leak detectors or water alarms—cheaper insurance in my book."

Leak detectors are handy, sure, but they're still reactive rather than preventive. Had a hose burst while I was out of town once—alarm went off, neighbor called, but still ended up with a flooded basement and ruined flooring. Now I just swap hoses every 5-7 years. Might seem overly cautious, but compared to the headache of water damage repairs, it's worth the peace of mind...

Definitely agree with replacing hoses proactively—it's a small investment that can save a ton of hassle later on. Leak detectors are great for early warnings, but they won't stop the water from flowing if you're away. Another handy tip is installing automatic shut-off valves; they're pricier upfront, but they'll actually cut the water supply when a leak is detected. Pretty reassuring if you're traveling often or just want extra peace of mind...

Yeah, learned this the hard way last summer... came home from a weekend camping trip to find the basement carpet completely soaked. Definitely considering automatic shut-off valves now—anyone know if they're tricky to install DIY?

I've been looking into automatic shut-off valves myself—seems doable DIY if you're comfortable with basic plumbing and wiring. But I'm curious, do these systems ever trigger false alarms and shut off water unnecessarily? Wouldn't want that hassle...

Honestly, automatic shut-offs sound good on paper, but I've heard some frustrating stories. Buddy of mine had one installed—thing kept shutting off whenever his washing machine kicked into spin cycle. Maybe just go old-school and invest in better pipe insulation instead...
