He says sticking strictly to the local plumbing codes is safest and easiest for inspections, but my brother-in-law (who's pretty handy himself) thinks there's room to be flexible as long as you're careful and know what you're doing. I'm kinda torn here...is it better to follow the codes exactly or is some wiggle room okay if you're experienced enough? Curious how others approach this.

Honestly, it was a bit of a nightmare at first, but here's what I did: started by checking my local city website for code specifics, then grabbed a PDF with diagrams (lifesaver btw), highlighted the relevant sections, and made notes to simplify it. Um, still felt confusing though. Wondering if anyone has a simpler method or a resource that's easier to digest?

He's all about following plumbing codes to the letter, even if it seems kinda overkill. Me, I think sometimes common sense and practicality should win out, you know? Like, if something works fine and is safe, why jump through hoops just because the code says so? Curious what others think—stick strictly to the book or trust your gut sometimes?

Just saw this story about a guy who got slapped with a hefty fine by his city for doing some plumbing repairs himself without checking local codes first. Apparently, he replaced some pipes and fixtures in his own bathroom, nothing major, just basic stuff. But the city inspector found out somehow (neighbor snitched maybe? lol) and now he's stuck paying hundreds in fines. Seems kinda harsh to me, I mean it's his own house, you know? Curious if anyone else thinks the city went too far or if this is justified...
